🎉 🎈There are no Rice birthdays today. 🎉 🎈
In celebration of Black History Month, today the history department recognizes Representative Louvenia Dorsey Bright: 1941-2023
Louvenia (loo•VEE•nee•uh) Dorsey Bright was the first African American woman (and the first woman of color) to serve in the Vermont state legislature. Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Louvenia moved to Vermont in 1971, and she was active in her community as a teacher and a leader in several organizations, including the Vermont State Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.
In 1988, she was elected to the Vermont State House of Representatives, serving the city of South Burlington. During her three terms in office, she championed race and gender equity, opportunity and inclusion, and she helped pass Vermont’s first Parental and Family Leave Act. The Bright Leadership Institute was established in her honor in 2021 as a “multi-stage training program for BIPOC Vermonters running for any level of public office or taking on community leadership roles”.

Blood Drive
On Monday, March 9th, the National Honor Society in cooperation with the Red Cross in Burlington will be sponsoring a blood drive. The need for blood in our area is great at this time of year and any students who are 16 or older are eligible to donate. Please see Mr. DiFalco or Ben Edwards to sign up. All Rice students who want to donate must have a permission form and these can be picked up from Mr. DiFalco in room 140.
The Knight’s Scroll
Students interested in publishing their writing or artwork in Rice’s new literary journal, The Knight’s Scroll, should email their submissions to sophomore Maelyn Slavik: [email protected]. Deadline for submissions is Feb. 20th.
Do you enjoy writing? Working with tech? Thinking of majoring in communications or marketing? Want to celebrate something that goes on at Rice? Just looking for a way to be more involved? The Knight’s Banner is looking for students interested in helping out. There is no commitment — participate as much or as little as you want. See Mr. Matarazzo with any questions.
