🎉 🎈Today, we celebrate the birthday of Sarah Platzer, Reese Tourville, and Holden Blair. 🎉 🎈
In celebration of Black History Month, today the history department recognizes Martin Henry Freeman: 1826-1889
Martin Henry Freeman was the first black president of an American College. Freeman was named president of Avery College in Pennsylvania in 1856. Freeman also helped establish Liberia College after emigrating to Liberia in 1862. He was a professor of Mathematics at Liberia College until he was named President of the College in 1868.
Freeman was born in Rutland in 1826, the son of Charles and Patience Freeman. He never attended the local school, but was tutored privately by his reverend, William Mitchell. He was a gifted learner and excelled in mathematics and science, eventually enrolling at Middlebury College in 1845. Although Middlebury College had had black students in the past and boasted a strong abolitionist culture, Freeman experienced a great deal of prejudice from his peers and professors. Despite these challenges, he excelled in his studies and graduated as the Salutatorian of his class. Freeman spent the rest of his life pushing for increased education for his peers, teaching many of them himself, or organizing the institutions that would help fulfill the promise of education in a world that restricted access to education.
