My Name by Fiona Gong

When I introduce myself people will usually say “Oh, like Princess Fiona! From Shrek!”
One time, thought, a girl said, “Oh, Fiona Apple! I love her music!”
My name was created by a poet, a long time ago. when my friend gave me a valentine’s day card, she had turned my name into a poem-
F fantastic
I intelligent
O outstanding
N nice
A amazing

My name means “fair” or “white.” I have a different name, a name in Chinese. I dont know how to spell it, but I love the way it sounds-Gong Poi Lien, rolling off my grandmothers tongue.
When I was young she taught me how to write the characters for it in thick black ink. It means Lotus flower.
It means I have a place I belong.
It means I am loved.
It means I have a line, a tie, connecting me to a place I have never seen.

Fiona means “fair,” “white.”
It means oldest sister of five siblings.
It means a daughter, a granddaughter, a cousin, a niece.
It means best friend. It means student.
It means purple and green and white and pink, it means a fifteen year old girl.
Fiona, it is just a name.
The other day my friend texted and said, if other people have the same name as I do, is it even my name?
My name is not just mine. It is a collection of syllables belonging to many people. To my old best friend, Fiona Callanan, to a girl who used to go to my school. Fiona. It does not just mean what it means to me, it means so many things to so many different people.
I heard my name and I think I’m in trouble. Or someone needs me. Or someone is looking for me.
Other people might hear it and think mother
Or dog or cat or wife or the singer or the princess.
Or rain and sky or pink and red

what a beautiful introduction to your character and name! when i met you, i thought of ‘fiona’ as a soft sounding name, whose beholder is a fellow transfer sophmore, with ideas that echo! you mention your heritage and ‘tie’, in a way that makes the readers’ hearts beat! the perception of your name is certainly based on experience but your identity is strong! you connect colors to yourself, and show the rich array of talent you have!
